“Louder Than A Bomb is an annual poetry festival hosting over 1,000 youth poets for a month of Olympic-style poetry bouts, workshops, and special events. Students representing schools and community groups in the Chicago area perform original solo and group poems in a tournament-style competition.
This year, Louder Than A Bomb pays tribute to Gwendolyn Brooks, the legendary Chicago poet who was the first African American to win the Pulitzer Prize in Poetry, and who was dedicated to documenting Chicago and its inhabitants. This year marks her centennial.
The festival’s last two remaining events are the Indy Finals and Team Finals. Indy Finals will be held tonight at DuSable Museum of African American History, 740 E. 56th Place. Team Finals will be held on Saturday, March 18 at The Auditorium Theatre, 50 E. Congress Parkway. Team Finals will also feature performances by special guests, including Chicago rapper Taylor Bennett.
For 17 years, young people in Louder Than A Bomb have used the tools of spoken word, hip-hop poetry, and personal narrative to traverse the city in new ways. Collectively, Louder Than A Bomb works to desegregate the city of Chicago by bringing the youth together to listen to each other’s stories.”
